The Basics

Understanding Ingrown Toenails

An ingrown toenail (onychocryptosis) occurs when the edge or corner of a toenail — almost always the big toe — grows or is pushed into the surrounding skin. This causes pain, redness, swelling and, if left untreated, infection. It’s one of the most common reasons people visit a podiatrist, and one of the most avoidable if caught and managed early.

Some ingrown toenails settle with careful conservative care, while others keep returning no matter how carefully they’re trimmed. When a nail is chronically or severely ingrown, a short, in-chair procedure under local anaesthetic can remove the offending nail edge for good, ending the cycle of pain and infection.

Treatment Options We Offer

Ingrown Toenail Treatments at Beecroft Village Podiatry

Not every ingrown toenail needs surgery — treatment is matched to the severity and history of your particular nail.

Mild

Conservative Nail Care

Careful clinical trimming, packing and offloading for early-stage ingrown toenails that haven’t yet become chronic or badly infected.

Common

Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA)

Removal of just the ingrown edge of the nail under local anaesthetic, with the nail bed treated to prevent that edge from regrowing.

Severe

Total Nail Avulsion (TNA)

Full removal of the nail plate, used for widespread ingrowing, severe infection, or significant nail deformity affecting the whole toe.

Permanent

Phenolisation

A chemical matricectomy applied to the nail root after removal of the offending edge, permanently preventing that section of nail from regrowing.

Recurrent

Chronic Ingrown Toenails

For toes that keep flaring up despite conservative care, a definitive in-chair procedure ends the ongoing cycle of pain and infection.

Kids

Paediatric Ingrown Toenails

Gentle, age-appropriate assessment and treatment for children and teenagers, from nail care advice through to minor procedures when required.

⚠️

Why You Shouldn’t Ignore an Ingrown Toenail?

It’s easy to keep trimming down a sore nail edge and hope it settles — but a genuinely ingrown toenail rarely resolves on its own, and home “bathroom surgery” often makes things worse. Left untreated, the nail continues to dig into the skin, and the risk of infection climbs the longer it’s left.

Left unaddressed, an ingrown toenail can lead to:

  • Spreading bacterial infection and abscess formation
  • Overgrown, inflamed tissue (granulation) around the nail fold
  • Cellulitis, particularly serious for people with diabetes
  • Chronic pain that changes the way you walk
  • Repeated flare-ups in the same toe without definitive treatment
Our Approach

Expert Ingrown Toenail Surgery at Beecroft Village Podiatry

We aim to give you lasting relief, not just a temporary trim — using a proven, gentle procedure with minimal downtime.

1

Assessment & Diagnosis

We examine the nail, check for infection and discuss your history of flare-ups to determine whether conservative care or a procedure is the right path.

2

Local Anaesthetic

The toe is fully numbed with a local anaesthetic injection before any procedure begins, so the treatment itself is virtually pain-free.

3

Nail Surgery Procedure

The ingrown section (or, where needed, the entire nail) is carefully removed, with a chemical treatment applied to the nail root to prevent regrowth if permanent removal is agreed.

4

Dressing & Aftercare Instructions

Your toe is dressed in clinic, and we provide clear, written instructions on wound care, footwear and activity for the days that follow.

5

Follow-Up & Healing Check

A follow-up appointment confirms the toe is healing well and gives you the chance to ask any questions as normal sensation and activity return.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ingrown Toenail Surgery FAQs

Does ingrown toenail surgery hurt?

The toe is fully numbed with local anaesthetic before we begin, so the procedure itself is virtually pain-free. Some mild tenderness for a day or two afterwards is normal and manageable with simple pain relief.

How long does the procedure take?

Most nail surgery procedures, including the anaesthetic, take around 30-45 minutes in the chair, and you can walk out the same day.

Will the nail grow back?

It depends on the procedure. A partial nail avulsion without phenolisation may allow that section to regrow, while phenolisation permanently prevents the treated edge from returning.

How long is recovery after nail surgery?

Most patients return to normal, closed-in shoes within 1-2 weeks, though full healing of the nail bed can take a little longer depending on the extent of the procedure.

Do you accept health fund rebates or Medicare (EPC)?

Yes, we accept Medicare Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plans and rebates from most major private health funds.

Can you treat an infected ingrown toenail straight away?

Yes, we regularly see patients with active infections and can begin appropriate treatment promptly, including antibiotics where needed alongside or ahead of any procedure.
