The Basics

Understanding Arch Pain

The arch of your foot is made up of bones, ligaments and tendons working together to absorb shock and support your body weight with every step. Arch pain develops when this structure is placed under repeated strain, whether from the shape of your foot, your footwear, or how much load you’re putting through it day to day.

It can show up as a dull ache after a long day on your feet, a sharp pain first thing in the morning, or a burning sensation along the sole. Left unchecked, arch pain tends to worsen gradually, changing the way you walk and placing extra strain on your knees, hips and lower back.

Causes

Common Causes of Arch Pain

Arch pain rarely comes from a single event — it’s usually the result of ongoing strain building up over time.

✓Flat Feet (Fallen Arches)
✓High-Arched Feet
✓Plantar Fasciitis
✓Unsupportive or Worn-Out Footwear
✓Sudden Increase in Activity
✓Prolonged Standing or Walking
✓Excess Body Weight
✓Tight Calf Muscles
✓Overpronation While Walking
Symptoms

Signs You May Have Arch Pain

Arch pain can present differently depending on the underlying cause, but these are the symptoms we see most often.

●Aching or Burning Along the Sole
●Pain That’s Worse First Thing in the Morning
●Discomfort After Standing or Walking
●Tenderness Along the Arch or Heel
●Swelling Along the Bottom of the Foot
●Stiffness That Eases With Movement
●Pain That Worsens Through the Day
●Visible Flattening of the Arch
●Cramping in the Foot or Calf
Types We Treat

Types of Arch Pain We Treat at Beecroft Village Podiatry

An accurate diagnosis of what’s actually causing your arch pain is the foundation of a treatment plan that works.

Structural

Flat Feet (Pes Planus)

A low or collapsed arch that places extra strain on the plantar fascia, tendons and ligaments along the sole of the foot.

Structural

High-Arched Feet (Pes Cavus)

A rigid, high arch that reduces natural shock absorption, concentrating pressure through the heel and ball of the foot.

Soft Tissue

Plantar Fasciitis-Related Arch Pain

Inflammation of the plantar fascia band, commonly felt as sharp pain near the heel that radiates into the arch.

Tendon

Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction

Strain or dysfunction of the tendon that supports the arch, often leading to gradual arch collapse if untreated.

Overuse

Overuse-Related Arch Strain

Pain triggered by a sudden increase in walking, running or standing time without adequate support or recovery.

Paediatric

Growing Arch Pain in Children

Arch discomfort in children and teens linked to growth, flexible flat feet or activity levels, requiring a gentler approach.

⚠️

Why You Shouldn’t Ignore Arch Pain?

It’s easy to write arch pain off as “just tired feet,” but ongoing discomfort is usually your foot signalling that something structural needs attention. Pushing through the pain without addressing the underlying cause tends to make the problem worse, not better.

Left untreated, arch pain can lead to:

  • Progressive flattening or collapse of the arch over time
  • Chronic plantar fasciitis or heel pain
  • Compensatory pain in the knees, hips or lower back
  • Changes to your natural walking pattern (gait)
  • Reduced ability to stay active, exercise or stand for work

Frequently Asked Questions

Arch Pain Treatment FAQs

What causes arch pain to be worse in the morning?

The plantar fascia and surrounding tissues tighten overnight while at rest. Taking those first steps in the morning stretches the tissue suddenly, which is why pain is often sharpest first thing and eases slightly once you’re moving.

Do I need orthotics for arch pain?

Not always. Some cases respond well to footwear changes, stretching and strengthening alone. Others benefit from custom orthotics to support the arch and redistribute pressure — we’ll only recommend orthotics if your assessment shows they’ll genuinely help.

Is arch pain the same as plantar fasciitis?

Not exactly. Plantar fasciitis is one common cause of arch pain, but arch pain can also stem from flat feet, high arches, tendon issues or overuse. A proper assessment helps identify which one applies to you.

How long does arch pain take to heal?

Most patients see meaningful improvement within 4-8 weeks of starting a tailored treatment plan, though this can vary depending on the underlying cause and how long you’ve had symptoms.

Do you accept health fund rebates or Medicare (EPC)?

Yes, we accept Medicare Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plans and rebates from most major private health funds.

Can children get arch pain too?

Yes, arch pain in children is common, particularly during growth spurts or in active kids with flexible flat feet. We offer gentle, age-appropriate assessment and treatment for younger patients.
