The Basics

Understanding Bunions

A bunion (medically known as hallux valgus) is a bony bump that forms at the joint where your big toe meets your foot. It develops gradually as the big toe drifts inward toward the smaller toes, pushing the joint outward and causing it to protrude. Over time, this joint can become inflamed, stiff and painful, particularly in enclosed footwear.

Bunions are progressive — they rarely get better on their own and tend to slowly worsen without intervention. Early assessment makes a real difference to comfort and to slowing how quickly the deformity advances, even though the underlying bony change itself can’t be reversed without surgery.

Causes

Common Causes of Bunions

Bunions develop from a mix of inherited foot structure and everyday pressures placed on the big toe joint.

✓Family History & Inherited Foot Shape
✓Tight, Narrow or Pointed Footwear
✓High Heels & Poor Forefoot Support
✓Flat Feet & Abnormal Foot Mechanics
✓Ligament Laxity & Joint Hypermobility
✓Rheumatoid Arthritis & Inflammatory Conditions
✓Prolonged Standing or Occupational Load
✓Previous Foot Injury
✓Age-Related Joint Changes
Symptoms

Signs You May Have a Bunion

Symptoms can vary depending on how advanced the deformity is, but the following are the most common signs to watch for.

●A Bony Bump at the Base of the Big Toe
●Redness, Swelling or Warmth Over the Joint
●Pain When Wearing Enclosed Shoes
●Restricted Movement of the Big Toe
●The Big Toe Drifting Toward Other Toes
●Corns or Calluses Where Toes Overlap
●Persistent or Intermittent Aching
●Difficulty Finding Comfortable Footwear
●Thickened Skin Over the Bump
Types We Treat

Types of Bunions We Treat at Beecroft Village Podiatry

Not all bunions are equal — an accurate assessment of severity is the foundation of an effective management plan.

Mild

Early-Stage Bunion

A small, subtle bump with minimal toe drift. Usually manageable with footwear changes and conservative care alone.

Moderate

Progressive Bunion

Noticeable joint prominence with the big toe visibly angling inward. Pain and shoe-fitting issues become more frequent.

Severe

Advanced Bunion

Significant joint deformity, marked toe overlap and persistent pain, often requiring discussion of surgical options.

Juvenile

Adolescent Bunion

Bunions that develop in children and teenagers, usually linked to inherited foot shape and requiring careful monitoring as the foot grows.

Tailor’s Bunion

Bunionette

A similar bony prominence forming on the outside of the foot at the base of the little toe, rather than the big toe.

Inflammatory

Bunion with Bursitis

A bunion complicated by an inflamed, fluid-filled bursa over the joint, causing extra redness, swelling and tenderness.

⚠️

Why You Shouldn’t Ignore a Bunion?

It’s tempting to just switch to looser shoes and put up with it — but an unmanaged bunion rarely stays the same. Without guidance on footwear, padding and offloading, the joint tends to keep drifting further out of alignment, making the bump larger and more painful over time.

Left unaddressed, a bunion can lead to:

  • Progressive worsening of the toe deformity
  • Painful corns, calluses and skin irritation from shoe rubbing
  • Hammertoes and crowding of the smaller toes
  • Altered gait and pain spreading to the ball of the foot
  • Increased joint stiffness and a higher risk of early arthritis
Our Approach

Expert Bunion Treatment at Beecroft Village Podiatry

We don’t just look at the bump on your toe — we assess how your whole foot moves and build a plan to keep you comfortable and mobile for the long term.

1

Thorough Assessment & Biomechanical Analysis

We assess joint alignment, range of motion and the way you walk to understand what’s driving the bunion and how quickly it’s likely to progress.

2

Pain & Pressure Relief

Padding, strapping and offloading techniques to reduce pressure and irritation over the joint and provide fast relief from day-to-day pain.

3

Custom Orthotics

Where foot mechanics are contributing to the problem, custom orthotics can help redistribute pressure and slow further progression of the bunion.

4

Footwear & Toe Splint Guidance

Practical advice on shoe shape and fit, plus toe spacers or splints where appropriate, to reduce friction and slow joint drift.

5

Ongoing Monitoring & Surgical Referral

Regular review to track progression, with referral to a trusted foot and ankle surgeon if conservative care is no longer enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bunion Treatment FAQs

Can a bunion be reversed without surgery?

The bony change itself can’t be fully reversed with conservative care, but the right footwear, padding, orthotics and monitoring can ease pain and slow how quickly it progresses.

What shoes should I wear if I have a bunion?

Look for shoes with a wide, deep toe box and soft upper material that doesn’t press directly on the joint. We can give you specific fit advice based on your foot shape.

Do orthotics help with bunions?

For many people, yes. Custom orthotics can help correct underlying foot mechanics and reduce the pressure that drives bunion progression, particularly in earlier stages.

Will I definitely need surgery for my bunion?

Not necessarily. Many bunions are managed successfully with conservative care for years. Surgery is generally only discussed when pain and deformity significantly affect daily life.

Are bunions hereditary?

Foot shape and joint structure that predispose you to bunions are often inherited, which is why they can run in families, though footwear and other factors also play a role.

Do you accept health fund rebates or Medicare (EPC)?

Yes, we accept Medicare Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plans and rebates from most major private health funds.
