The Basics

Understanding Ankle Sprains

An ankle sprain happens when the ligaments that hold your ankle joint together are stretched or torn, usually after the foot rolls inward or outward beyond its normal range. It’s one of the most common lower limb injuries we see, affecting everyone from weekend sports players to people who simply misjudge a step off a kerb.

While many sprains are dismissed as “just a rolled ankle,” the ligament damage underneath can range from a mild overstretch to a complete tear. Without proper diagnosis and rehabilitation, even a seemingly minor sprain can leave the joint weaker and more prone to rolling again.

Causes

Common Causes of Ankle Sprains

Ankle sprains can happen in an instant, but certain activities and risk factors make them far more likely.

✓Sport & Exercise Injuries
✓Uneven Footpaths & Surfaces
✓Unsupportive Footwear
✓Previous Ankle Sprains
✓Poor Balance & Proprioception
✓Sudden Changes of Direction
✓Missing a Step or Kerb
✓Weak Ankle Stabiliser Muscles
✓Fatigue During Activity
Symptoms

Signs You May Have a Sprained Ankle

Symptoms can vary depending on how severe the ligament damage is, but the following are the most common signs to watch for.

●Pain & Tenderness Around the Ankle
●Swelling & Bruising
●Difficulty Weight-Bearing
●Reduced Range of Motion
●A Feeling of Instability or “Giving Way”
●Stiffness After Rest
●Warmth Around the Joint
●A Popping Sensation at Time of Injury
●Ongoing Ankle Weakness
Types We Treat

Types of Ankle Sprains We Treat at Beecroft Village Podiatry

Not all ankle sprains are equal — an accurate grade and diagnosis is the foundation of an effective treatment plan.

Grade 1

Mild Sprain

Ligaments are stretched with minor tearing. Mild swelling, tenderness and little to no joint instability. Usually settles with conservative care.

Grade 2

Moderate Sprain

Partial ligament tearing with moderate swelling, bruising and some joint instability. Weight-bearing is often painful and takes longer to resolve.

Grade 3

Severe Sprain

Complete ligament rupture with significant swelling, bruising and marked instability. Requires close monitoring and a structured, longer-term rehab plan.

Recurrent

Chronic Ankle Instability

Repeated sprains from ligaments that never fully regained strength or proprioception after an earlier injury.

High Sprain

Syndesmotic (High) Ankle Sprain

Injury to the ligaments above the ankle joint connecting the lower leg bones, often from a twisting mechanism during sport.

Lateral

Lateral Ligament Sprain

The most common type, involving the ligaments on the outer side of the ankle after an inward roll of the foot.

⚠️

Why You Shouldn’t Ignore a Sprained Ankle?

It’s tempting to strap it up, rest for a few days and get on with life — but an under-treated ankle sprain rarely heals the way it should. Without a proper assessment, the ligaments can heal in a lengthened, weakened state, leaving the joint far more vulnerable to future injury.

Left unaddressed, an ankle sprain can lead to:

  • Chronic ankle instability and repeated “rolling”
  • Ongoing pain, swelling or stiffness long after the initial injury
  • Compensatory issues in the knee, hip or lower back
  • Reduced sporting performance and increased re-injury risk
  • Long-term joint damage and a higher risk of early-onset arthritis

Frequently Asked Questions

Ankle Sprain Treatment FAQs

How do I know if my ankle is sprained or broken?

It can be difficult to tell the difference without an assessment. Severe pain, an inability to bear any weight, or visible deformity are all signs to get checked promptly — our podiatrists can assess your ankle and refer for imaging if a fracture is suspected.

How long does it take to recover from a sprained ankle?

Recovery time depends on the grade of the sprain. Mild sprains often improve within 2-3 weeks, while moderate to severe sprains can take 6-8 weeks or longer with a structured rehabilitation plan.

Should I still see a podiatrist if the swelling has gone down?

Yes. Swelling settling doesn’t mean the ligaments have regained full strength or stability. An assessment helps confirm the joint is genuinely ready for normal activity and reduces the risk of re-injury.

Do you offer same-week appointments for ankle injuries?

Yes, we understand ankle injuries need timely care and regularly fit in same-week appointments for new sprain presentations.

Do you accept health fund rebates or Medicare (EPC)?

Yes, we accept Medicare Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plans and rebates from most major private health funds.

Can you help prevent future ankle sprains?

Yes. Alongside treating your current injury, we can prescribe balance and strengthening exercises, bracing or orthotics to reduce the risk of repeat sprains.
